When I tell some people that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is, without a doubt, the second best NBA player to ever live, many people look at me cross-eyed. This has always been confusing to me. Not only is Abdul-Jabbar cemented as the second best ever, he also has a very strong case to be number one.

This is not even an argument that should be made, as it is obvious that this statement is true. When you look at his resume, it’s tough to argue against this. He is a 6 time NBA champion, a 19 time All-Star, 2 Finals MVPs, a 2 time scoring champion, and a Rookie of the Year. We can’t forget the fact that he has the most points scored all time. One of his Finals MVPs came at the age of 38. LeBron James gets so much praise for being good for so long, but people neglect Abdul-Jabbar when it comes to this subject. Abdul-Jabbar was an All-Star for every season of his career except one, and he averaged 17 points and up until he turned 40.

The biggest reason why Kareem and other big men don’t get talked about as much as guards and some forwards is because of just that… they’re big. Whether people want to believe it or not, some people think that being a 7 footer with some skills give them an unfair advantage. Some people think their path to the NBA was easier because for most of their lives they have been taller than the competition. This may be true to some…
